First Meeting

I always start the relationship with a comprehensive evaluation, whether you have had prior treatment with a mental health provider or not. This includes learning about the current issues that you want help with, your life situation, your past history of similar or other problems and past treatment, your family history, and your medical history. Family members are often included for part of this first session and additional family input may be sought. A series of forms are provided for you to complete and these are reviewed, to insure that information is complete. The interview is an opportunity for you to ask me questions, as well, to make sure that you are comfortable with me and feel that I am the right person to help you. By the end of that session I can usually provide you with my assessment as to what I think are the important problems to address and a treatment plan as to how to resolve them. If medications are indicated and acceptable to the patient, they can usually be started. Psychotherapy may be the initial treatment and can sometimes resolve problems alone. Many people may benefit from a combined approach.
